Busy 2011 and New for 2012

So it has been a very busy few months. I have been spending a lot of time learning kindergarten and doing school things. In the next few months I am going to try to focus on my self, physically and spiritually. For the physical I'm using http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ to track my food, exercise and progress. I have lost 12 lbs this month but have 100 lb to go. For the spiritual I first need to get on track with my Bible reading and personal study. 1. I am now teaching kindergarten! It has been an interesting 16 days of school so far and I'm glad I was at least switched the day before school started :)

2. I love using technology with kids and was the technology teacher at Highlands Elementary for 7 years.

3. I have 3 blogs, am in charge of our school website and oversee a daily CAFE yahoo group. My classroom blog is a work in process as I switch from my first grade blog, http://ortunosocean.edublogs.org/ to my kinder blog http://mrsortunosocean.blogspot.com/.

Brain Toys

ChrisRekstad posted this great explanation of Brain Toys, the newest goodies from Whole Brain Teaching. Here is the forum post and below it Chris' explanation. Enjoy

There are three levels of understanding: memorization, paraphrasing and original thinking. Brain Toys are used to engage the prefrontal, visual, motor and auditory cortex in original thinking, learning’s highest level.

1. Props: books, pencils, papers, keys, even a whole classroom can become problems, ideas, events, abstractions, etc.

2. Air Blackboard: clean the dirty left corner; pull the screen to any size you want, make invisible diagrams. Good for illustrating the relationship between ideas, creating outlines, anything that can be drawn.

3. Mirror: Use your hands to act out a story. "First", (Hold up one finger)"the man drove his car to town" (Pantomime driving a car), etc.

4. Sockless Hand Puppets: great for conversations between opposing points of view: can be used to compare and contrast or in any dialogue situations.

5. Infinity Sack: Use the Infinity Sack when you need something that can't be illustrated by a single prop. Pull anything you want out of your infinity sack: mountains, cities, people, an ocean, a mouse, a planet of daffodils to use in any explanation...

6. Example Popper: Pop example out of the top of your head to illustrate important points.

7. Vocab Candy: Pop one in your mouth and automatically use a vocabulary word in your next sentence!

8. Two Finger, All Terrain, Action Figures, with Anti-Gravity Boots:
use them to recreate any sequence of events in a story or a process. Walk your Action Figures on your desk, in the air, up your arm, anywhere. They're All Terrain! And they hop free of gravity!

9. Because Slappers: "Because" is probably the single most important word in clear thinking, because it introduces evidence for your conclusions. Slap one hand on top of the other when you use "because" to show your are "building" evidence.

10. Compare/Contrast: Bump your fist together when contrasting; lace your fingers together when comparing. Compare/Contrast is probably the most powerful, most deeply explanatory of all Brain Toys...use frequently!

11. Combos: Use any combination of the above.

Use these when you use the "Teach/Okay". Instead of (clap twice) "Teach"...try this...(Clap Twice) "Props" and the kids say "Okay".

This adds variety and builds massive critical thinking. Try it out tomorrow!

Had Family Literacy Night and a week long book fair at school that I was in charge of at the beginning of the month and just had a great gathering with the Pittsburg Spanish congregation

Elisa got some dresses and books from Grandma and Grandpa

Bought Elisa's dress for the Memorial and Muzzy to help us all with Spanish

For my family book I'm finally going to use the ABC book that was from LifeTimez, the software from Top Line Creations that the Ettes designed for. It is similar the the Ettes' ABC book in the store. I am not sure what picture to put on the cover yet so it is just the title

Organizing Math stuff in the Classroom

We have consumable math books so I have parents eager to help at the beginning of the year rip out each chapter and staple it so students only have one chapter at a time. This has worked better then giving students the whole book or one page at a time. Students keep their math in a folder in their book bins.
I was able to grab a TON of Math Land tubs that were being thrown out when we adopted our new math program that I have stacked by my Board Math white board. Here is a picture from before school started this year under the blank board.

I am reading Debbie Diller's new book Math Work Stations and hope to get all organized soon.

Daily Organization in the Classroom

Mrs. Patton has invited us all to share our Daily Organization Tips as part of her Organization Week! Finally have time since I have today off :) For daily organization I need to work on my paper stuff and I hope to use the desk apprentice from Staples that I got at the beginning of the year. A teacher was throwing it away along with a lot of other great stuff when he switched rooms. Right now it holds stuff that doesn't fit it my file cabinet like the Oral Vocabulary Cards for Treasures but I think I can fit daily files in it too. The big thing I do do is line up all the files I need for the week on my desktop of my laptop. Here is my desk top for next week.

- You're fairly certain that a select few students will never recognize the written difference between a "b" and a "d" no matter how many times you correct them.

- You get just as excited as the kids do when the Scholastic book order comes in.

- You welcome inventive spelling if only to have something entertaining to read.

- You wish you got a dollar every time you told your class to "be a level zero in the hallway" or to "get on the line" when walking down the hall.

- You have at least one Dr. Jean album on your iPod.

- Calendar activities exhaust you. {Maybe that's just me... I'm hoping that doing it on the SmartBoard next year will alleviate some of my pain!}

- You love your students' goofy smiles due to their jack-o-lantern-like assortment of *missing* teeth.

- On that same note, you are driven *12 kinds of crazy* when students repeatedly get up from whole group time to get a tissue to wiggle a loose tooth.

Been working hard teaching first grade. Got some of the house organized. Started blogging again

Elijah is the hospital was scary as was Daniel's ear leaking gross stuff. Bad weather, especially rainy day recess for over a week

9. How did I do on my goals for the month? (Or any current short or long term goals)

Didn't get far with my weight loss goals so I'll try again to get on track. Did alright taking photos but didn't make a photo a day. I'm going to switch at least a photo a week I think.

10. Anything else noteworthy to include?

The kids are all so into music and do the funniest dances. I really have to video them and scrapbook the photos I took this month

One of my main projects is to organize and update my personal, professional and classroom libraries. To help with all 3 I have found Bookmooch, a free book trading site. So today I am back at work after a 4 day weekend and I got a lot done, especially since I am sick :)

HOME TACKLES:

I have had an entertainment center from Freecycle in the truck for a few weeks. I finally got Elisa's room rearranged enough to put it in there. It will hold her tape player, tv, puppets (the bottom works great as a puppet theater) and movies.

This week I want to finish organizing her room and tackle the storage unit since some of her old stuff will be going in there.

SCRAPBOOK TACKLES:

Started LOM 2009 and found an AWESOME program, ACDSee. More posts about what I've done with that to come.

The next few months will be filled with tackles based on LOM. This week I need to continue my Lesson 1 assignments, mainly sorting photos by year and backing up digital photos.

SCHOOL TACKLES:

Have been grading Reading Lions' test and have to get those inputted.

This week I have to get some emergency sub plans ready

So I was playing online last night and found these 2 great sites for Project365 templates

Both have AWESOME templates not only for Project365 but for multi photo layouts.

One problem, I ended up with the malwear XP Police Antivirus on my computer! The site used to transfer the files seems to be the issue. My hubby was able to find the fix last night here and installed Norton on my laptop since my McAfee didn't stop the program.

So all in all I am excited for the templated but reminded of the importance of up to date antivirus software and backing up your computer :)

There are many new features that Memory Mixer 2 does not have but it is missing a few things that are suppose to me a part of Memory Mixer 3 coming out this month on QVC. School Tackles - Last week of school for 2008 so I need to tackle for school stuff this week. I tackled my first year of parent teacher conferences last week. They went really well actually. This week is about getting ready to start fresh in 2009 after the two week break. Will be putting together new folders, fresh name tags and sprusing up my classroom. Will need to take photos to post. There are 2 churches using the school now so I'll go in next week to set everything up.

Home Tackles - Working on rearranging/cleaning the house, mainly the bedrooms. Would post photos but am way to embaressed to have evidence of how horrible the place looks :)

My tackle of our room is going well but not finished. I got my scrapbook cubes moved and partly organized. (man do i have too much unused stuff) I went through my closet and am happy to say I was able to fit into a dress from 6 years ago :) Now I have basically been the same size since high school, around a 16 so this isn't too huge but for having twins a month ago I'm happy. In order to organize the bedroom I had to reorganize the storage room so I could put some stuff in there. That is pretty much done until I can move the stuff for my classroom.

SO this week:

Finish cleaning/organizing bedroom including scrapbook area
Take TLC inventory over to Kristi's for trading and to see what she can sell for me at her crop next weekend
Take photos for the babies' announcements and put them together
Finish thank you cards to mail with announcements

That should keep me more then busy :)

So I thought I should post some of the things I have been tackling this summer since I haven't blogged.
Main tackle has been delivering my twin boys June 10th and having then in the NICU for 2 weeks.

The other main tackle has been organizing and cleaning the house. The past weeks I have done the kitchen, bathroom, living room and Elisa's room. This week and next will be our bedroom which is also where the boys sleep.
Hopefully I'll be better about tackling things and posting them :)

Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Things NOT to do when you move

1. Through things in boxes with out labels. I have no idea where some stuff is

2. Not check the washer/dryer connections. Still can't believe I didn't look at this

3. Try to clean with a 4 year old around. Elisa has been given some very funny chores to do to keep her away from the cleaning chemicals

4. Clean out air conditioner filters in the bathtube. I ended up clogging the tube at the new place when I washed off all the AC filters

5. Tryto move in one weekend. This is oursecond move where we have had almost a month to move and clean and it makes things soooo nice.

6. Try to reschedule any transfering of services. I scheduled the phone and dsl to switch on the 2 but tried to move it up when we were able to move most stuff earlier. We ended up with no phone part of a day and no dsl for 3 days

7. Believe the property manager. We are in a duplex that resently had the PGE meter split. We were told that PGE would be putting in the meter any day and that the water meter was split. Turns out the work on the PGE split has not been finished and the water has never been separate. We have water and electricity but have to split the water cost with the back unit and wait at least a month more before we will have a meter for PGE.

8. Try to move even the smallest thing while pregnant, especially with twins. I have gotten yelled at by everyone for lifting even the tiniest things. It's good to be loved :)

9. Believe the Direct TV sales person. Of course I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get our Direct TV service setup and charging right. The sales person even forgot to put in the $18 a month discount she had promised.

10. Hook up the tv before you are finished moving. It makes it way to easy to just "take a little break" and waste half a day.

11. Start moving stuff into the new place before you clean. We did a pretty good job of cleaning first thanks to having my cusin coming to help us. Now if everything would have stayed clean :)

12. Move more furnature then you need to. We have a lot move furnature then I thought and now that we have good sized closets,way too many dressers. Wish I could have craig listed them instead of moving them

13. Forget your camera. I took a lot of photos of our old and new place so that I could scrapbook the move and so I could plan where furnature would go.

WE MOVED! My tackle this week is to get the last of our stuff from the garage at our old place and clean enough to get our deposit back. I also need to figure out if we are going to get a gas dryer or have someone hook up a 220 outlet for our electric dryer.

I am so happy to be moved but we have a lot of work to do

Quick Update

So thought I better post a quick update and will post more soon.

Good Stuff:
1. Babies are growing and doing well. I go for my second in depth ultrasound tomorrow and will try to post pics

2. At this time I have a job next year but not the same one. Some news should come in May from the state that hopefully will mean my job will not be cut. Have to wait and see.

3. Mom was able to finally have her total knee replacement a few weeks ago and is doing pretty good. The knee was even worst then the dr thought so recovery is slow. Now she just has to recover so they can do the other knee :)

4. We have moved!!! That is one reason I have not been around online, took AT&T a few more days to switch our DSL. I will get some pics posted soon but am liking it so far.

5. My cousin Sandra was able to come over for 2 weeks and help my mom was she got home from the hospital and help us move since I can't lift anything. She was a HUGE help and it was fun having her around.

Bad Stuff:

1. Can not seem to kick this cold that I have had going on 3 weeks. It is better though and the babies are good.

2. Didn't look closely at the washer and dryer hook ups at the new place and have to either get a gas dryer or wait for our friend to put in 220 for our dryer.

3. Efrain smashed his foot really bad yesterday playing basketball. He says he will be ok but it looks really yucky.

OK so that wasn't really that quick but now you can see why I have been too busy to post. Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying spring. TTFN

Update on work

So as those of you in California might know the Governor has proposed huge budget cuts for next fiscal year, especially to education. What you may not know is that the schools have to plan as if the proposed budget has gone through. This means millions in cuts to most school districts, a little over 5 million to the one I teach in, Pittsburg Unified. So last week the Pittsburg school board decided to end class size reduction which means my job will no longer be around next year. Since I have been with the district for 7 years I should have a job teaching something else. I won't know until Thursday of this week.

So I am a very stressed, very preggers woman right now. Hope today's DR appointment will bring good news.

11. Baby Trend Snap N Go double stroller - even though this one only fits the babies until they are 20 pounds it means I don't have to take them out of their infant seats and I only have a light frame to fold and fit into the trunk.

12. Baby Trend infant seats - they fit the best into the Snap N Go and are an inch thinner at the base so they will fit better into our car.

13. Graco Turbo booster - the best ranked booster seat that also is thin enough to fit in the middle seat between the twins. Elisa likes this one:

So not totally wordless today :) Thanks for all the comments and emails for last week's WW post. I am 14 weeks along and due July 18th. Just went to the dr and heard the heart beats today, so cool. Don't know if they are identical or fraternal or if they are boys or girls. We didn't get an ultrasound but here is a pic to give an idea of how big the babies are already, about the size of a fist.

So this weeks tackle was to finish cleaning the kitchen and try to be a good Fly Baby and keep my sink empty.
I ended up switching to finding a new place to live. I was thinking I could put this off but the more I tried to clean up our 1 bedroom place the more I realized most things just have never found a home in this place so they end up in piles.

I think I have found a good place that we can afford and stay put for a while. We even have an option to do a lease to own. It is a 3 bedroom/1 bath that the owner is doing a lot of wok to. Brand new Energy Star windows, new tile floors throughout the house, freshly painted cabinets with new hardware and new appliances in the kitchen, large front and back yards that will be easy to set up play areas for the kids and the house is in the boundaries for the schools we want. Efrain and I are meeting with the owner on Saturday and hopefully my tackle for next week will be getting ready to move :)

OK time to get blogging again. This is two days late but here you go :)

I finally got some cleaning done this week, a lot on Tuesday. My goal for the week was to get the kitchen sink cleaned out. I was able to do all the dishes that were in the sink and give the sink a good scrub. I then had a full sink again once I had all the pots and pans soaking :(
So this weeks tackle is to finish cleaning the kitchen and try to be a good Fly Baby and keep my sink empty.
I would share pictures of my mess but they are too embarrassed. Think the messiest house from Clean Sweep and you have a good idea of what my place has been looking like :(

DSLR for Newbies Challenge 2

There will be a new challenge posted each Thursday, but it's not necessary to complete it within that particular week. So, if you're starting late, or get behind, that's fine!

The only thing required to become a 'DSLR Graduate' is to complete all the challenges by the time it's over. In this case, all 7 challenges must be posted by midnight on Thursday, November 29th. Normally, it would end on the previous Thursday, but since that's Thanksgiving in the USA, I'll give everyone an extra week!

My Most Important Things and Monday List of TO DO

OK so part of the Simple Living Manifesto: 72 Ideas to Simplify Your Life that I am doing is to simplify your to do lists. The suggestion is to pick a few things to concentrate on each week and break those into smaller tasks for each day. All of these to do's, or at least most of them, should match your life priorities. Idea 1 helps you pick those priorities: Make a list of your top 4-5 important things. Whatâs most important to you? What do you value most? What 4-5 things do you most want to do in your life? Simplifying starts with these priorities, as you are trying to make room in your life so you have more time for these things.

My Most Important List

A. Jehovah God

B. Family

C. Self growth and improvment

D. Work and Friends

So with these in mind my weekly to do's are:

1. Study for and attend all meetings this week, including at least 1 morning service (Matches A,B,& C on my list)

2. Start to organize and decutter the house (B and C)

3. Clean and organize my office and classroom desk (C and D)

Organization and Simplification

My life has been feeling very crazy since school started back up so I am on a mission to get more organized and simplify my crazy life. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has tried to do the organize thing 100 times but I hope this time will stick :)

My first task is to complete most of the 72 items on this list from Zen Habits.

Along with that I am creating a Life List thanks to Cool People I Know.

The plan is to slowly work my way through the Zen Habits list and slowly add to my Life List.

DSLR for Newbies Challenges

Now I have what I call a fake DSLR. When I was pregnate my gift to myself was an HP Photosmart 945. I love the feel and all that you can do with this camera but it is not a true DSLR and there is a long lag between shots. I have an adapter for adding lens but I haven't used it :) Hopefully this class will teach me some tricks.

Week 1 is on White Balance. I'll add my photos once I take them :)
